Experience great golfing on the English Golf Riviera

We’re blessed with some stunning golf courses in the UK, but arguably the jewel in the crown is the West Lancashire coast.

Across a 20-mile stretch of the Red Rose county’s coastline are some of England’s finest and most scenic golf courses. It’s a must visit for any avid golfers. Even if you’re only a beginner and the prospect of heading to such courses is a little daunting there are plenty of facilities in the local area offering lessons or the opportunity to hone your skills.

Within close driving distance of Hurlston Hall and Shaw Hall holiday parks are five of the top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland. You’re just a short car journey away from Southport and Ainsdale, Hillside, Formby, West Lancashire and the iconic Royal Birkdale, it’s truly a golfer’s paradise.

If you’re a regular visitor to your holiday home, there’s even the opportunity to consider membership at one of these prestigious clubs. It’s links golf at its finest, with picturesque coastal views, holes set within the rough wild of the dunes and the chance to walk the same fairways as the biggest names in the game.

Here are the top five courses:

Royal Birkdale
Nine-time Open Championship venue, Royal Birkdale, could be just a ten-minute drive from your Willerby home front door. A short trip from Hurlston Hall park and you could be teeing it up where the likes of ‘the King’ Arnold Palmer, Padraig Harrington and Tom Watson won major titles.

Hillside
The 2019 British Masters venue, Hillside, may be more to your liking. Known as an underrated gem, but living in the shadow of its neighbour, Royal Birkdale, means it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. However, next year it will welcome one of the poster boys of Team Europe’s 2018 Ryder Cup victory and Southport native, Tommy Fleetwood, and a host of other international stars. You could be there to witness events and enjoy the luxury of being just 15 minutes from home.

Southport and Ainsdale
Southport and Ainsdale is set amongst the dunes of the wild North West coastline and can be as tough a test as any if the wind is blowing. It has played host to the Ryder Cup on two occasions, in 1933 and again in 1937, when the iconic Walter Hagan and Ben Hogan were part of the US teams. It’s one for the purists and you’ll be blown away by its natural beauty.
West Lancashire

As the region’s oldest surviving golf course, West Lancashire is one of the finest you’ll play. Founded in 1873 it’s believed to be naturally designed with very little input from architects. A classic links with views of Blackpool to the north and Liverpool bay in the south it’s one not to be missed.

Formby
Considered by many in the local area to be the prettiest course among those on the Lancashire coast. Formby is bordered by pine trees and set in 470 acres of Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) as it’s one of the few places in the UK where you may see a native red squirrel. A truly unique course that will be a stern test for any golfer.

Whatever your ability these are without doubt some of the finest golf courses these shores have to offer. Once you’ve enjoyed 18 holes and a quick visit to the 19th you can then head back to your luxury holiday home and relax while looking forward to your next round.
