Plants to help you relax

You don’t have to be a gardener to like plants and many have some great health benefits. A few people we know have been feeling anxious or stressed in the last couple of months so we thought we would share our favourite plants and their benefits with you. Hopefully we can inspire you to grow your own and feel the benefit.

Lavender

It not only looks and smells beautiful, but it has a myriad of health benefits. According to the Sleep Doctor “lavender works as an anxiolytic (an anxiety reliever) and as a sedative, to increase relaxation and calm, and help bring about sleep". Read more here.

Rosemary

Rosemary has been used in traditional medicine for years. Research shows that simply inhaling the aroma of rosemary essential oil can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your blood. As a plant it massively improves air quality too. All round winner.

Sansevieria

Sansevieria are commonly known as Snake Plant, Mother-in-Law's Tongue or Good Luck Plant. This house plant can improve concentration, sleep, and reaction times, while also lowering overall levels of anxiety. And according to NASA, it is one of the best plants for improving air quality and removing toxins. Well if it’s good enough for NASA…. You can buy one here.

Jasmine

Jasmine is a shrub most commonly found outdoors but can be grown inside. Pop it into your bedroom and you’ll soon be having sweet dreams. You can also buy it as a tea or as an organic oil.

Chrysanthemum

As well as bringing extraordinary cheer to uplift your mood with its vibrant colours, chrysanthemums also improve air quality which instantly decrease symptoms of stress, anxiety, and worry. Check out this website for more information on where to buy.

Chamomile

More commonly associated with tea, the actual plant is very pretty indeed. It can dispel stress and negative emotions and energy and has a very soothing aroma. We just love this little plant kit, it would make a perfect and thoughtful gift if someone you know is feeling the strain.

Aloe vera

If you are anything like the team at Willerby HQ, we wouldn’t call ourselves natural gardeners. The aloe vera plant soothes your anxiety from the outset as it is so easy to keep and very difficult to kill. It has natural anti-inflammatory properties and removes harmful toxins from the air. It might just be time to invest!

Peppermint

You can easily grow peppermint in or outdoors and it has multiple uses. The menthol, found in the plant, is often used in bath products to help soothe aching muscles. It can also lower frustration and boost your mood. Why not chop up some fresh leaves and add them to your bath? How is that for stress-relief! This is a great website to help you out with the variations and how to grow it.
