How we're helping to save the bees!

How Willerby is helping save the bees – and how you can too!
Our mascot is the humble bee – as in the 1940s our founder Walter Allen made beehives before making the switch to holiday homes.

Over 70 years later we’re still going strong and adopting the bee as our mascot was our little way of saying thank you to the man who made the beehives!

But sadly things aren’t so rosey for the bees.

Since the late 1990s, scientists around the world have noted a mysterious disappearance of bees, and report unusually high rates of decline in bee colonies.

The main reasons for global bee-decline are linked to industrial agriculture, parasites/pathogens and climate change. The loss of biodiversity due to monocultures and the wide-spread use of bee-killing pesticides in particular are threats for bees.

So here’s what we've have been doing to help:

• We’ve given away 30,000 packets of wildflower seeds to help rebuild bee habitats
• We’ve renewed our corporate membership of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BBCT)
• We give an info leaflet and a packet of seeds to every member of our Owners Club in their welcome pack
• A packet of seeds is given to every visitor to Willerby Showgrounds
