Willerby produces nothing but 'enviro' models

A staggering waste recycling rate of 81% (and rising) is indicative of the emphasis Willerby has placed on reducing its environmental impact.

Irrespective of whether a model leaving the Willerby factory is in environmental green plastic, cream aluminium or even genuine timber cladding, of increasing importance to Willerby is that not only is the unit of the very best quality, but that every part of the process involved in it''s construction and manufacture is as considerate of the environment as possible.

Whilst carbon footprints and environmental impact are hot topics in the current climate, Willerby have been addressing the major issues surrounding the combination of operational efficiency and waste reduction for a number of years. The following examples of waste management and recycling initiatives across all Willerby sites have contributed to a 77% general waste reduction in the period between 2003 and 2007:

  • Compactors and bailers - Site-wide installation of machinery to reduce waste volumes

  • Traversing roller - equipment has been implemented to maximise the compacting of all waste

  • Briquette Machines - suitable waste is compacted into briquettes that are used for domestic heating

  • Incineration - appropriate waste is incinerated to provide heating to certain areas of the factory

  • Waste Grading Teams - full time teams dedicated to dealing with the grading of waste products to maximise recycling potential

Recycled materials include: Timber, MDF, Chipboard, Mixed woods, Polythene, Polystyrene, Cardboard
PVC, Vinyl, Metals and Glass.

A focussed team led by Willerby's Facilities Manager Graham Kemp has implemented these and many other initiatives in order to reduce the impact of manufacturing processes on the environment.

Graham comments "We have made great strides forward in the management of our waste materials, to the extent that in some areas, we've created a healthy income stream from the re-sale of segregated waste, which is certainly a preferable option to paying to have it removed!"

"Our procedures and practices are constantly under review and our commitment to ongoing improvement in these areas is gaining the full support of everyone in the business."

"In tandem with addressing our waste management procedures, we have implemented energy efficiency schemes such as an intelligent building management system that uses internet technology to control our heating, lighting, compressed air, extraction, air conditioning and door systems. As part of the monitoring and controlling of heat loss, the system is able to send messages directly to team leaders and managers to alert them of events that are having an impact on energy efficiency. Whilst this is a new initiative, we're already beginning to see substantial fuel bill savings."

With consumers becoming increasingly aware of the steps they can take to reduce their own carbon footprint, Willerby's commitment to the environment extends to the development of models that have optimal thermal and energy efficient properties throughout their lifetime. Having already pioneered the use of energy efficient lighting as standard throughout their range, Willerby strive to use A-rated appliances where supplied, and by carefully selecting materials for use in the construction of all models they are making positive strides in reducing the impact on the environment, examples include:

All aluminium panels used in the construction process are manufactured from recycled material
Vinyl claddings are made from lead free composites and can be fully recycled
Chipboard (98% recycled product), MDF and timber products are sourced from FSC accredited stockholders with full custody chain management procedures.

By exploring and adopting new techniques for manufacturing high quality holiday homes that consider the impact of the environment in which their built and used, all Willerby units are as green as possible, regardless of their external colour!
